Late-wage compensation
Wages delayed: compensation is due
On top of the debt itself, the law grants separate compensation for the delay (פיצויי הלנת שכר). What matters is the formula and the short window in which it can be claimed.
In short
- What late-wage compensation is
- This is monetary compensation on top of the wage itself, which the law imposes on the employer for paying late (פיצויי הלנת שכר, חוק הגנת השכר §17). The amount is 5% of the withheld sum for the first week and 10% for each following week, or indexation plus 20%, whichever is higher. This compensation has a short limitation period (§17א): as a rule it is claimed within 60 days of the day the wage was eventually paid.
What to do
How to claim late-wage compensation
The main thing is not to miss the deadline: late-wage compensation lapses faster than the right to the wage itself.
Calculate the delay
Determine the withheld amount and how many weeks it was delayed. The base formula is 5% for the first week and 10% for each subsequent week of delay, or indexation plus 20%, whichever is higher.
Gather the evidence
Keep the payslips, the actual payment date (if the wage was eventually paid) and the agreed payday. The deadline for claiming the compensation is counted from the payment date.
Watch the limitation period
Late-wage compensation must usually be claimed within 60 days of receiving the delayed wage (§17א), and the court may extend this period. If the wage was never paid at all, the window for the compensation is still shorter than the 7 years for the wage itself, so the claim should not be delayed.
File a claim if needed
If the employer does not pay the compensation voluntarily, it can be recovered through the labor court together with the debt itself. The procedure for filing a claim is covered in a separate guide linked below.

What the law says
- The amount of compensation

- Limitation period
